How did stockings become part of a Christmas Tradition?

The hanging of Christmas stockings by the fireplace mantle is a Christmas tradition. To those with no fireplaces, hang their stockings on bedposts, Christmas trees, doors, doorknobs, staircases, walls, windowsills and other areas in the house. Endless little spots. On Christmas, Santa will arrive and fills the stockings with gifts and small treats.

For centuries, stockings have been an essential part of the Christmas tradition. There’s no record of written origin for Christmas stockings, but there are several legends written that attempts to tell the story.

The most popular legend about the Christmas stockings goes like this: A long time ago, there was a poor man with three beautiful daughters. He was worried about the future of his daughters, because he has no money to get them married. One day, Saint Nicholas was walking and he heard the villagers about the poor man's daughters. He wanted to help, but he knew that the old man wouldn't accept any help. So he decided to help secretly. At night, he through three bags of gold through the open window and one bag landed in an open stocking. The next morning, the father and the girls woke up and found three bags of gold. They were overjoyed and they were able to get married. And they live happily ever after.

This legend led to the tradition of children hanging stockings on Christmas and eagerly waits for Saint Nicholas's gifts.  And the legends made Saint Nicholas a gift-giver. This tradition actually began in European country; children simply hang their everyday socks or their parents' socks (the bigger, the better, for more gifts). Later on, Christmas stockings were made and sold in the market just for this purpose. Today, there are variety of colors, sizes and styles. There are also families that create their own Christmas stockings with names so that Santa will know which stocking belongs to which member of the family. But whatever stockings you prefer to hang on Christmas, the Christmas stocking tradition still live on until today.

Some stories told that Saint Nicholas gifts were gold balls instead of gold. We can all attest to the fact that gold balls in our stockings would be amazing, but that one will probably remain on our Christmas list.
